Highlights:

Discover the rugged landscape of northwestern Sichuan

Set out on an adventure into a vast landscape of rolling meadows and jagged mountain peaks. In this part of northeastern Sichuan, near the border with Gansu Province, nomadic Tibetans still herd yak and sheep in the summer in what is part of the traditional Tibetan Amdo region. Here, the Yellow River leaves the mountains of Tibet and forms part of the border of Gansu as it moves eastward before suddenly turning north in the wide S-shaped First Bend of the Yellow River as it moves upward towards the massive Ordos Loop in the north, the cradle of Han Chinese civilization.

Minimum adult travelers: 1

Itinerary:

8:00 a.m. Jiuzhaigou hotel pick up

8:00-11:30 a.m Drive through the Galitai Mountain Pass to Zoige Grassland

Nomadic Tibetans still come to the lush, rolling Zoige Grasslands in summer to herd yak and sheep. Just past the grassy hills and plains, jagged peaks rise up in the distance. Want to get a closer look? It’s your private tour! Enjoy the scenery along the road and feel free to get out of the car a bit and explore.

12:00 p.m. Lunch in a local restaurant in Tangkor (Tangke)

Dig into a local lunch in Tangkor, one of the little Tibetan nomad towns in the traditional Tibetan Amdo region that hasn’t been overrun by the tourist machine.

2:30 p.m. Visit the First Bend of the Yellow River

The mighty Yellow River cuts a winding path through the flat, green meadows just north of Tangkor. Where it meets the smaller White River, the First Bend of the Yellow River forms a great S-shape before the river moves north into the great Ordos Loop.

3:30-7:00 p.m. Drive back to Jiuzhaigou town from grassland.
